附錄四　ASCII 字元

簡介

ASCII 英文原名為「American Standard Code for Information Interchange」，翻譯成中文是「美國資訊交換標準代碼」。一開始的編碼是 7 位元，能編 128 個字元，現在稱為「標準字元集」。後來擴充為 8 位元，支持 256 個字元，以提供特定於語言的字元，各種符號以及方框字元，128～255 範圍內的字元稱為「擴充字元集」。

ASCII 只能顯示 26 個基本拉丁字母、阿拉伯數字和英式標點符號，因此只能用於顯示現代美國英語，對更多其他語言依然無能為力。因此，現在的作業系統大多採用萬國碼 ( Unicode ) 編碼。儘管如此，早期的電腦作業系統，有許多是採用 ASCII 編碼，尤其是要學習 DOS 作業系統，不可不知。

ASCII 第一部分：控制字元 ( 00H～1FH )

ASCII 碼大致可以分作三部分組成。第一部分由 00H 到 1FH 共 32 個，一般用來通訊或作為控制週邊設備之用，有些字元可顯示於螢幕，有些則無法顯示在螢幕上，但能看到其效果 ( 例如換行字元、歸位字元 )，稱為控制字元 ( control characters )。如下表：

ASCII 第二部分：標準字元集 ( 20H～7FH )

第二部分是由 20H 到 7FH 共 96 個，這 95 個字元是用來表示阿拉伯數字、英文字母大小寫和底線、括號等符號，都可以顯示在螢幕上，稱為標準字元集 ( standard character set )。如下表：

ASCII 第三部分：80H～FFH

第三部分由 80H 到 0FFH 共 128 個字元，一般稱為「擴充字元集」( extended character set )，這 128 個擴充字元是由美商 IBM 公司制定的，但它並非標準的 ASCII 碼。IBM 把 80H 到 0FFH 用來表示框線、音標和其他歐洲非英語系的字母，如下表。

然而上圖的 80H 到 0FFH 共 128 個字元，並不是標準，所以同一地區可能相同，但不同地區並沒有統一的規則可遵循。例如以色列電腦上的 82H 就變成希伯來文字母 Gimel ( ג )。後來經過 ANSI ( 美國國家標準協會，American National Standards Institute ) 制定一套規則，終於有了依據。這套規則使 80H 以下的字元上和標準的 ASCII 一致，不過由 80H 開始的字元會依照你住的地方而定。這些不同的系統就叫做頁碼 ( code page )。舉例來說以色列的 DOS 使用 862 的頁碼，而希臘則是 737。上表的頁碼是 437，乃是 IBM PC 所使用的。它們在 80H 以下是一樣的，不過由 80H 起就不同了。
